What to expect

Exam format

Duration35 minutes
Format100% speaking — no multiple choice. You talk to a computer; there is no human examiner in the room.
Tasks16 tasks total, across 4 task types (A–D)
RecordedYes — your voice is recorded and graded afterward, not live
Graded onClarity, vocabulary, basic grammar, task completion
Not graded onAccent, perfect grammar, advanced vocabulary
Task A · Q1–4Video Response. Watch a short video, answer a question about what you saw. (~20 sec each)
Task B · Q5–8Image + Opinion. See one image — describe it and give your opinion. (~20 sec each)
Task C · Q9–12Choose Between 2 Images. See two images, pick one and explain why. (~20 sec each)
Task D · Q13–163-Image Story. See three images in order, tell the story step by step. (~30 sec)
Computer + headphones + mic — there is no human examiner. Other candidates in the room are recording their own answers at the same time, so it helps to practice with background noise. You can re-record an answer, but your first take is usually the better one — don’t spend your 35 minutes on retakes.
Core strategy

Three patterns cover all 16 questions

  1. Always full sentences. “Fietsen” = fail. “Ik fiets elke dag.” = pass.
  2. Simple is better. Short and correct beats long and messy — A2 expects simple.
  3. 2–3 sentences per task. Not too little, not too much.
  4. Use a connector. en, maar, want, ook, daarom — see the vocabulary section below.
  5. Don’t re-record. Your first answer is usually best; re-recording just burns time.

Do

  • Speak clearly at a normal pace
  • Use full sentences, even short ones
  • Use simple words you know well
  • Pause briefly before you start
  • Submit your first recording
  • Stay calm — small mistakes are fine

Don’t

  • Answer with one word
  • Attempt complex grammar
  • Re-record unless you said nothing
  • Speak too fast or too slow
  • Stay silent — say anything relevant
  • Worry about your accent
The secret: every question = DESCRIBE + ADD. Describe what you see, then add one more thing — an opinion, a choice, or the next step. That’s the whole exam.

Pattern 1 · DESCRIBE Use for every question, Q1–16

This is your base for every single answer on the exam. Blue words are fixed — memorize them. Orange words are slots — read them off the image or video.

Ik zie [persoon]. Hij/Zij [werkwoord]. (I see [person]. He/She [verb]s.)

Ik zie een man. Hij loopt.

I see a man. He walks. — on its own, this is already a complete, valid A2 answer. Add Pattern 2 or 3 to go further.

Variations, all equally good:

DutchEnglish
De man [werkwoord]. The man [verb]s.
Er is een [persoon]. There is a [person].
Ik zie [persoon] in [plaats]. I see [person] in [place].

Word-swap tables — learn 5–6 from each:

Person

een man a man
een vrouw a woman
een kind a child
een meisje a girl
een gezin a family
mensen people

Verb (hij/zij form)

kookt cooks
eet eats
werkt works
fietst cycles
loopt walks
praat talks
leest reads
wacht waits
zit sits
speelt plays
koopt buys
drinkt drinks
slaapt sleeps
betaalt pays

Place

thuis at home
in de winkel in the shop
op straat on the street
in het park in the park
op school at school
op kantoor at the office
buiten outside
in de keuken in the kitchen

Pattern 2 · OPINION Use for Q5–8 and Q9–12

Add this after Pattern 1 for image tasks, or use the “choose” version for the two-image tasks.

Ik vind dit [mening]. (I think this is [opinion].)

Ik vind dit leuk.

I like this. Optional: add “want” + a reason — but even without it, this sentence scores points.

For choosing (Q9–12), swap to:

Ik kies [optie]. Want [reden]. (I choose [option]. Because [reason].)

Ik kies de fiets. Want het is gezond.

I choose the bicycle. Because it’s healthy.

Opinion + reason — mix any row with any row, they don’t need to match:

Ik vind dit…

leuk nice
niet leuk not nice
goed good
mooi beautiful
gezellig cozy

Want het is…

gezond healthy
lekker tasty
goedkoop cheap
snel fast
makkelijk easy

Pattern 3 · SEQUENCE Use for Q13–16

For the 3-image story task.

Eerst [zin]. Dan [zin]. Dan [zin]. (First [sentence]. Then [sentence]. Then [sentence].)

Eerst kookt hij. Dan eet hij. Dan wast hij af.

First he cooks. Then he eats. Then he washes up. — “Dan” twice is completely fine. Only reach for “daarna” / “ten slotte” if you’re already comfortable with them.

How to combine, by task type

TaskFormulaExample
A · Video Pattern 1, twice Ik zie een vrouw. Zij kookt.
B · Image Pattern 1 + Pattern 2 Ik zie een man. Hij fietst. Ik vind dit gezond.
C · Choose Pattern 2, choose version Ik kies thuis koken. Want het is goedkoop en gezond.
D · Story Pattern 3 Eerst regent het. Dan pakt de vrouw een paraplu. Dan loopt ze naar de bus.

Task-type examples, topic vocabulary & grammar

A worked example for each task type, then the full topic-organized vocabulary and grammar quick rules — the part of this page that isn’t in the 3 patterns above.

By task type

Formula: Pattern 1, twice — describe who/what, then add a detail.

Video: A man cycling to work in the morning.

Ik zie een man. Hij fietst. Het is ochtend.

I see a man. He cycles. It’s morning.

Video: A doctor talking to a patient.

Ik zie een dokter. Hij praat met een man.

I see a doctor. He talks with a man.

Vocabulary by topic

Not covered by the 3 patterns above — extra vocabulary organized by the situations the exam actually uses.

Grammar quick rules

Just enough grammar to build the sentences above correctly — not a full grammar course.

de vs. het

Use deUse het
All plural nouns: de mannen, de vrouwenDiminutives (-je): het meisje, het huisje
People: de man, de vrouw, de dokterLanguages: het Nederlands, het Engels
Animals: de hond, de katSports/games: het voetbal, het tennis
Trees/plants: de boom, de bloemMetals: het goud, het zilver
Most -ing words: de woning, de keukenDirections: het noorden, het zuiden

Exam trick: about 70% of Dutch nouns are de-words. When in doubt, guess de.

Most common words you’ll need

de-wordshet-words
man, vrouw, dokter, leraarkind, meisje, gezin
winkel, markt, apotheek, schoolpark, ziekenhuis, kantoor
keuken, kamer, tuin, straathuis, werk, eten, weer
fiets, bus, trein, autoboek, brood, fruit, water
hond, kat, tafel, stoelontbijt, avondeten, probleem

hij / zij / het — which to use?

PronounUse forExample
hij (he)de-words, male person or thingDe man loopt. Hij loopt snel.
zij / ze (she)de-words, female person or thingDe vrouw kookt. Zij kookt lekker.
het (it)het-wordsHet kind speelt. Het speelt buiten.
ze / zij (they)plural, more than oneDe kinderen spelen. Ze spelen buiten.

Simple rule: man = hij. vrouw = zij. kind/baby/meisje = het. Multiple people = ze. — and yes, “het meisje” technically takes het, but saying zij for a girl is accepted at A2 too.

Verb forms — who does what?

WhoRulekokenwerkenlezen
ikstem onlykookwerklees
jij/ustem + tkooktwerktleest
hij/zijstem + tkooktwerktleest
wij/zefull infinitivekokenwerkenlezen

For the exam: you’ll mostly use the hij/zij form (stem+t) to describe pictures — “De man kookt”, “De vrouw werkt”.

Irregular verbs — memorize these

Verbikhij/zijwij/ze
zijn (to be)beniszijn
hebben (to have)hebheefthebben
gaan (to go)gagaatgaan
doen (to do)doedoetdoen
kunnen (can)kankankunnen
willen (want)wilwilwillen
moeten (must)moetmoetmoeten
mogen (may)magmagmogen

een vs. de/het

UseWhenExample
een (a/an)first time mentioningIk zie een man.
de/het (the)already mentioned, or specificDe man kookt.

Speaking pattern: “Ik zie een man. De man kookt.” First mention = een, then = de/het.
